Theatre of Thought

Werner Herzog meets scientists from around the world in search of answers about the complex and intricate human consciousness. How are the thoughts that travel through the 86 billion neurons of our brains born? Is the reality we live in just the theatre of our consciousness? Herzog looks at the world with an infinite interest and fascination that infects everyone who watches his films. Even a subject as complex as neurotechnology is made down-to-earth and understandable in Herzog's documentary puzzle. Technology encroaches on the autonomy of minds and bodies, and the director is interested in the possibilities and threats it opens up. One thing is for sure: if Herzog were giving a lecture in school, you wouldn't want it to end.

After the screening, a discussion with neuroscientist dr. Urtė Neniškytė will take place. Neniškytė will explain the newest inventions in neurotechnology and brain research, as well as challenges and ethical questions that are faced in the field. Urtė Neniškytė earned her PhD in biochemistry from the University of Cambridge; she later completed her internship at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory’s site in Italy, a center for research in Epigenetics and Neurobiology. Since 2016, Neniškytė has worked at Vilnius University, where she is a founder of the molecular neurobiology lab and one of the research team leaders in Life Sciences Center, a partner institution of the EMBL. Neniškytė’s research focuses on mechanisms that are necessary for brain network developments (that happen between the sixth month and the sixth year of a human’s life). Irregularities in these processes are associated with such disorders as autism, schizophrenia, and epilepsy. Neniškytė also dedicates a significant amount of her time to spreading the knowledge about neurosciences among the general public.
