Potato Republic

Tarmo moved to the countryside with a dream to open up a museum he has named the Potato Republic. In a schoolhouse dating back to 1850, he is striving to open up a museum where the potato would be introduced by an outdoor bathtub cinema, bicycle ploughing and performances based on everything local and forgotten. The idea for the museum came from the large potato crops in the 1920s that gave cause for Estonia then to be called the Republic of Potato. Tarmo is trying to bring back the life and times of the 1920s to Laanemetsa. But is it possible to survive in a remote village so that dreams survive too?

Kätlin Kaganovitš

Kätlin was born in 1985 in Laanemetsa, a place where “Potato Republic” would be made some twenty years later. Kätlin is currently studying at the Department of Heritage Protection at the Estonian Academy Of Art, where she is looking into the possible ways by which documentary film enters into a field of life and makes it's statement. “Potato Republic” is her first film.
