Free Radicals: A History of Experimental Film

The artists and poets of cinema since before WWI have always been free radicals, crazy about filmmaking and pushing the artform in radical new directions. Trapped in a no man's land, excluded both from the art world and the film industry, they boldly created a grassroots network for making and showing their films in a spirit of friendship and solidarity. They also created a profound body of work that continues to influence our culture. In this film, I want to share a few of the films I love and introduce you to some of the free, radical artists who made them.

Pip Chodorov

Pipi Chodorov was born in New York in 1965. He has been in filmmaking and music composition since 1972. He studied cognitive sciences at the University of Rochester, NY and film semiotics at the University of Paris, France. He works in film distribution - previously Orion Classics, UGC, Light Cone and, currently, Re:Voir Video, Paris, which he founded in 1994. P. Chodorov also established The Film Gallery, the first art gallery devoted exclusively to experimental film. He is the co-founder of L'Abominable, a cooperative do-it-yourself film lab in Paris, and the moderator of an internet-based forum on experimental film.
